The sun came out over Corkagh Park today and treated the riders to a very fast and technical race. All down through the field there were battles going on with relentless attacks for position right throughout the race. Up front a lead group of four riders made a break on the first lap. The group included Robin Seymour (Team-WORC), Joe McCall (Focus MTB), Conor Campbell (Newry Wheelers/Revolution) & Evan Ryan (Team-WORC). The quartet stayed together for the first three laps until Seymour entered the tech zone with a puncture on lap four. A slow change of a wheel because of a brake problem meant he rejoined the race back in 7th place. Up front the trio of McCall, Ryan and Campbell were exchanging the lead but unknown to them Seymour was on a charge back up through the field. It didn’t take long for him to pass Sean O’Tuathail (Bray Wheelers) & Ryan Sherlock (MAD MTB) and within a lap he had the main group in his sight. Back in 7th place Peter McConville (Newry Wheelers) was having a lonely race out on his own suffering a bit from an early effort to stay with the lead group but riding well to stay ahead of the intense battle going on behind for 8th place with a group of six riders (Colm Aherne, Andy Newman, Myles McCorry, Luke Manning, Robert Scanlon (Junior) & Mark Drayton) wheel to wheel all after a top ten finish.
With two laps to go Seymour’s charge had paid off, now back into 3rd place the Wicklow rider had overtaken Campbell and was now on Evan Ryan’s wheel. About five seconds ahead current Irish champion Joe McCall was trying to take advantage of being in the lead but wasn’t quite managing to break the elastic back to the Team-WORK duo behind. On the penultimate lap Seymour took a well earned rest on Evan’s wheel before making his move with one lap to go, jumping his team mate and then overtaking McCall to regain the lead of the race. Behind Evan Ryan showed some great form overtaking McCall on the final lap putting the Focus MTB rider under pressure forcing him to make an uncharacteristic mistake on the last lap which saw him lose the front end on a corner and sealing second place for the Team-WORC rider. After an hour and six minutes of racing it was a delighted Seymour that took first place with his team mate Evan Ryan 17 seconds behind and McCall 24 seconds further back.
In the women’s race Cait Elliot took the honours and also finished a very strong 31st overall. Robert Scanlon took the Junior win just missing out on a top ten finish overall while Peter McConville finished 7th to take the win in the vets. The team prize for the 3rd race in the series was won by Team-WORC (Robin Seymour, Evan Ryan & Andy Newman).
The final round is next week and see’s the return to Tymon Park. Sign on is open now and once again is limited to 75 riders so sign on early.
