Super Cross Cup – Round 1
The SuperCross Cup Cyclo-cross Leagues first event is just over two weeks away, and the scene is now set for an exciting series of racing. Following the four fantastic events of last year, the Supercross Cup see’s some new venues added to its fantastic line-up of courses like Corcaigh and Tymon Park.
Round 1 sees a fast and flowing course at Grange Castle International Business Park in Clondalkin, Dublin 22. The course has been designed by Team WORC’s Stuart Galloway in association with Pfizer Grange Castles on site Cycling Club, the Grange Castle Wheelers, with members Mark Yandle, Malcom Prince regularly present at previous years events and the rookie for 2011, Matthew Kelly.
Race course – Subject to change dependent on weather conditions and safety considerations. A map will be put up on this website shortly before the day of the event. ~Riders are asked not to try and ride in this venue before the day of the event to ensure we maintain the good will of South Dublin County Council at this venue and Corcaigh and Tymon Park also and ensure we all have a great race on Saturday 08th October 2011.
Currently the course is in pristine condition with no races having been held there. Using a massive 300metre tarmac start and finish section, high speeds and close racing are guaranteed and will suit road riders and off-road riders alike with wide straights and open turns the course will be sure to favor strong powerful riders but with winds known to sweep in on occasion a smart punchy rider may come away with the pot on the day.
Most of the course can be seen from one or two locations which makes it spectator friendly whilst fans will be able to get close to the riders on the technical sections such as the banks and hurdles. Centered on a large picturesque man-made lake, this is the event for capturing dramatic race pictures of favourites or loved ones with this incredible backdrop.
A large crowd is expected and there are dedicated parking facilities at the adjoining Pfizer Ireland site. There will be no parking available anywhere in the Business Park other than the Pfizer car park so be sure to include your e-mail at pre-registration to get your name on the parking/access list.
Entry to spectators is free. Spectators not travelling with competitors are welcome but please inform marshals at the gate your name and if you have a cycling Ireland licence bring it along with you before trying to enter the parking area. To save time, drop a mail to the organizers to get your name on the car park access list in advance!
The Pit crews will also find a double pit area to cover technical issues and bike changes during the race. There is a walk of about 400metres from the car park so allow for this when travelling to and from the car park/pits.
Whatever the conditions in a week’s time, it is likely that the main contenders for the Cat 1 race on Saturday will all be there. Robin Seymour, Evan Ryan and Conor Campbell, winners at last year’s National Championships 2010, will be battling it out again along with the new breed of S1/2/3 mtb racers and A1/2/3 road riders while the Cat 2 event will provide a valuable springboard for launching future stars young and old alike from the S4, A4, U16′s, Junior and Women racing classes. This year’s Category 1 and 2 race format will make things more exciting and closer than ever before with all eyes on the overall series prize up for grabs after Round 5, early season points are key.
Further details can be found on the event website http://www.mtbireland.com/cyclocross/news.php
